An effort to improve presentation skills of young engineers
The Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) NED Chapter organized ‘Speak Out For Engineering’ (SOFE) an event to improve communication and presentation skill of young engineers.
SOFE is an annual presentation competition for IMechE young members who get an opportunity to make presentations on any technical topic of their choice in front of a panel of judges assessing the entries and thus provide feedback.
The aim of the competition is to develop presentation/communication skills and being able to deliver a technical presentation to a primarily non-technical audience.
Students can present any technical topic of their choice be it a technical hobby or an interest, a work-related project or even something unique for the competition.
What SOFE is looking for, is enthusiastic people who want to develop their presentation skills.
Adeel Yaqoob and Asad Ali, Chairman IMechE, NED Chapter said: “The basic purpose of organizing events like SOFE is to improve presentation skills of young engineers who are generally technically strong but lacking presentation skills.”
Since they are unable to present themselves in the industry for their lack of ability to sell themselves to industry, IMechE organizes this International Presentation Competition every year.
The students are selected at university level and then sent to district levels before final selection for country level. The best speakers are sent abroad for the international competition. The funding is done by IMechE and the student does not have to pay even a single penny.
“IMechE is basically a UK-based society and has multiple chapters in different countries.
In Pakistan, it has three chapters; one is in DHA Suffa University, the other in NUST and the third in NED University of Engineering & Technology.
IMechE organizes different competitions internationally for the grooming of youth and young engineers.
The judges of the competition Mr. Hasan Ali and Saiyid Najam Rizvi said the major problem that our youth was facing was relating to communication which needs to be improved.
SOFE is a competition arranged every year to overcome communication problems in our students. The contestants are selected from all over the world for the final competition in Spain.
A lawyer by profession, he said he was an expertise in communication skills and thus SOFE judge. ‘It is very necessary for an engineer to develop his communication skills because only an engineer knows properly as to how a product has been developed and what are its pros and cons. Thus, an engineer has to present his work with industry and if he/she will be lacking in the presentation or communication skills they are doomed to face failure. So, events like SOFE should be organized to support our youth for the prosperous future of Pakistan.” (The writer is Co-Chairman IMechE – NED chapter)

The best papers were shortlisted for IEEEP Multitopic Symposium to be held in February 2019.
IEEEP Running Trophy will be awarded to the university whose students will secure top position in Multitopic Symposium.
Muhammad Irfan Shaikh, Convenor IEEEP Fair said the educational institutions should also organize similar programs adding such initiatives would improve the linkage between academia and industry. Shaikh said the industry should welcome academia to train students and the teachers so that they know about the industry.
Chief Executive Officer, Rastek Technologies, Rafiq Ahmed Lakhani appreciated the moot and said organizing such seminars was very necessary. The purpose is to encourage students so that they propose better ideas and give better solutions to industrial problems of Pakistan. This will create better opportunities in the future for them for moving towards upcoming latest technologies.
Pakistan, he says is not suffering from working technical solutions but the issue is that the governments do not support such ideas. The students work day and night on the projects but the governments tax them rather than supporting them financially. Our laws are the major problems promoting ideas of our students. These laws should be improved.n -

PEC moves on to regulate students intake!
Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has decided to register fresh engineers in the first year of their admissions instead in the final year in all universities of the country. The council has launched an online “Students Intake Portal”, which will help the council to regulate students intake allowed by PEC.
Now the students in engineering universities would require to register themselves with the PEC through its online system along with their entries in their respective institution.
The move is aimed at ensuring that engineering universities should not exceed the quota allotted to them, Salih Rind, a member of the Governing Body (GB) of PEC told Engineering Review.
Earlier, the engineers were required to register themselves with the PEC in the last year of their graduation and thus the PEC used to remain in the dark as to how many engineers were enrolled in the university. The practice has affected the supply and demand of engineers in Pakistan.
In many instances, various universities exceeded the allotted seats and enrolled the students on self-finance schemes, Engr. Rind said. Now the PEC would have prior information and can prevent extra enrolment in the future.
The decision was taken in 33rd meeting of the Governing Body of the PEC held on November 28 in Lahore. Chairman PEC Engr. Jawed Salim Qureshi chaired the meeting.
The moot also approved launching of “Pakistan Journal of Engineering” which will cover the entire engineering regime with a major focus on research contribution in the advancement of knowledge and invitation solutions. It is the first time in the history of Pakistan that a PEC has taken the initiative to launch Engineering Journal, Engr. Rind said.
Annual General Meeting
25th Annual General Meeting was held on 29th Nov at UET Lahore. Engr Jawed Salim Qureshi Chaired the meeting. Former Chairman Engr. Akram Shah and Chairperson Engr. Rukhsana Zubari also graced the occasion.Engr. Khadam Hussain Bhatti presented the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Report highlighting the performance of the Council.
Audited accounts of the council were presented in the moot which approved the budget of the council for the next year.
Engr Jawed Salim Qureshi and former leads of the council emphasized the role of engineers in national development. The Chairman said Pakistan economy could grow like Malaysia, South Korea and Vietnam provided technological advancement in the field of engineering were made possible.
Engineers should be given a leading role in policymaking. PEC is committed to supporting the government in policymaking, he said.
A large number of engineers attended the meeting appreciating the performance of the Council under the leadership of Engr. Jawed Salim Qureshi.
CPD course
Engr Muhammad Salah Rind member TEP & GB Member of PEC conducted a CPD training Course on introduction to Integrated Managment System, Standards (IMS) ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BS OHSAS 18001 at PEC HQ Islamabad.
Engineers from Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta attended training program through video links from respective PEC branch offices. (ER Report) -

IEP at the center of gravity, BY MANZOOR SHAIKH
Major contenders of power intend to bring about a critical change Of 50 thousand registered engineers, only 15 thousand to decide about new leadership. IEP
Rising engineering demands be it huge technological transformation around the world or changes at home have affected each and every institution and among them, the Institution of Engineers Pakistan (IEP) is the one where many senior engineers seem resolute to respond to the demands of the day. The elections of the institution only have given them a platform.
IEP has over 50 thousand registered engineers and an overwhelming majority is dormant. The total number of voters is only 15 thousand. Karachi and Lahore, the two largest cities of Pakistan have a major concentration of voters with 5,000 and 3,000 voters respectively.
This time, the institution has three of its senior engineers vying for the top slot and have their plans for bringing about the change that they believe is necessary for engineering profession as well as education in Pakistan. They are Engr Farhat Adil, the sitting senior vice chairman, Javed Uppal, and Iqbal Qureshi.
Engr Farhat Adil claims they will bring about a critical change in the institution which has a long history of contribution to Pakistan’s engineering sector.
“I and my friends have reached a conclusion that the institution should play its due role in the changing circumstances. One of the demands is to help engineers for enhancement and modernization of engineering education. “To achieve this goal, I intend to launch engineering educational institutions all over Pakistan,” Engr Farhat revealed.
An NEDian and having over 35-year working experience with NESPAK, now in EA Consulting, Adil believes that a lot has changed since the institution came into existence. “IEP is like a nongovernmental organization (NGO) which was initially aimed at giving non-conventional education to the engineers and also to diploma holders for bringing them at par with engineers.
In Ayoob Khan era, Pakistan Railways diploma holders were doing engineering works and they were protesting for their upgradation. Thus, the IEP decided to give them unconditional training to bring them at par with engineers. It was a success at that time. Later on, many changes and modernization in engineering took place and thus the process could not continue.Farhat recalled IEP tried to open its own educational institutions but could not do it for various reasons.
This time, I am resolute to open IEP University or IEP Engineering colleges in various cities.
This will not be a commercial venture as we do not want to earn money, but intend to give quality engineering education. Retired engineers and engineering professionals will teach there and also own the institutions. These institutions could be run under IEP foundation like Bahria and other foundations are running their institutions. This is a doable target, Engr Farhat says.
Like Farhat Adil, his fellow engineer Javed Uppal who is also a candidate for the office of the central chairman of the institution and strongly feels there must be a change. However, he says the IEP is in the sleeping mode and is unable to play its due role in the changing world. “IEP has become a club of engineers and is not serving the engineers”, he said while talking to Engineering Review.
“We should have begun training our engineers after Pakistan entered into International Mobility Group (IMG) and getting due share in the international job market for our engineers.” Since we did not, more jobs are going to Indians and Malaysians, he said.
Engr. Uppal claims he would do it after winning the elections as Pakistani engineers need a jump. “We would organize training at all IEP centers in Pakistan”, he resolved.
Why IEP is in the sleep mode? “Internal polarization has done such a damage”, he responded. The infight has diverted the attention of IEP from young engineers. I would try to bring such an antagonism to an end, he says.
“IEP can be effective if all groups should gather on a common ground and our group intends to give a serious try, he said. It is imperative because of two reasons, One that our industry is passing through a crisis and second that we need more efficient engineers for China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)
Uppal is satisfied with the response he is getting from IEP voters who participated in the elections through the ballot.
Engineering Review tried to contact Iqbal Qureshi but failed to talk to him
